MUSANZE—Innocent Shyaka has been elected the guild president for the 2008 academic year at the Higher Institute of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry-ISAE Busogo. Shyaka got 72 per cent of the total vote to beat his sole rival Ibrahim Mwanganga. Mwanganga garnered some 21 per cent in the students’ elections carried out last week at the school campus.
The elections were carried out by the Students General Association (AGE).
Only two females including Raisa Akimana and Petra Niyonsenga participated in the exercise to fill 11 posts. They were elected to the posts of Gender and General Secretary respectively.
Meanwhile, the new guild council was sworn in on Sunday. The function was graced by the new university Rector Dr Charles Karemanjingo and attended by student leaders from other tertiary institutions in the country.
In his acceptance speech, Shyaka pledged to promote a good students and lecturer relationship by being a voice for the students. He particularly promised to solve issues of students’ bursary, accommodation and advocate for increased practical lessons at school. Shyaka asked the university to include a students’ representative on the university management committee.
The Rector Dr. Karemanjingo congratulated the students for high level of democracy and transparency exhibited during the campaign.
He pointed out that as the institution undertakes academic and financial reforms there was need for professionalism in order for the institution to play a key role in agricultural transformation in the country.
During the ceremony, 11 members of the outgoing students’ guild council were awarded leadership certificates.
