KARONGI–District Mayor Bernard Kayumba has revised down the death toll from last Friday’s floods to three from 10 which had been reported earlier.

“Though a lot of property was destroyed, there, are only three confirmed deaths so far. We are closely monitoring the situation at this moment.

“We have dispatched a team of experts to assess the extent of the damage caused by the floods, but everything is under control.”

Meanwhile, humanitarian efforts are underway in the district to help those affected by the floods.

Kayumba told The New Times that the rains affected part of the road network in some sectors, but added that rehabilitation works were ongoing.

Floods in most hilly areas of the district destroyed crops, livestock and swept away household property.

Farmers in Gitesi Sector, where the heavy downpour resulted into a mudslide, were especially affected.

“The agricultural season had just started and now my farms are all destroyed. My farming ambitions are now in limbo,” lamented Alphonse Musabyimana, whose two hectares of maize were swept away.
