KIGALI - One of the main activities slated for today’s community work Umuganda, is renaming streets that connect neighbourhoods within Kigali City.
The street- naming exercise will take place in the three districts of Nyarugenge, Gasabo and Kicukiro.
Addressing journalists yesterday, the Mayor of Nyarugenge District, Solange Mukasonga, noted that the residents will name the streets after the community work.
Streets that connect cells will be named with assistance of representatives of district representatives, while the major city roads will be named by the districts.
Highways connecting provinces will be decided at the national level.
The mayor also urged citizens to participate in Umuganda.
“Everyone has to personally participate in for both community work and the meetings. We need the workforce especially for activities that develop our areas,” she said.
Today will also see awards given for outstanding projects that were completed as a result of community efforts. Those nominated include The Gatsata Bridge, which is along the Kigali-Gatuna Highway, in Gasabo, the Nyarugunga, 9-Year basic education schools, in Kicukiro and the Kanyinya houses, in Nyarugenge which were constructed for the poor
