PRIMUS national league sides Rayon Sports and Police Fc face-off this afternoon on the first day of the 2011 Primus Cup tournament, the match will be played at Kigali regional stadium in Nyamirambo.

The match between the two teams that have a lot to prove in the coming season after a heavy spending in the transfer market during the offseason will be preceded by the clash between the defending champions SC. Kiyovu against AS Kigali.

All eight teams will be using the lucrative competition as a platform to assess the fitness levels of their players ahead of the start of the 2011/12 league season which is scheduled to start on September 17.

Police coach Serbian Goran Kopunovic said yesterday, “We’re well prepared to face Rayon Sports. We’ve had a good pre-season and I think this tournament is going to help us prepare for the start of the new season.”

His opposite number Jean Marie Ntagwabira of Rayon whose side lost to Police in the semi final of last year’s Peace Cup on penalties said that this is the time to talk about revenge.

However, by yesterday, Ntagwabira was still waiting the arrival of his new signings, the Burundian quartet of Hussein Mbanze, Karim Nizigiyimana, Cedric Kwizera and Fuadi Ndayisenga.

Primus Cup action continues tomorrow with Etincelles playing La Jeunesse in the early kick-off, before last season’s league and cup double winners APR entertain Marines.

Primus beer is sponsoring the tournament to a tune of Rwf 17 million with Rwf 5 million going directly to the eight participating teams for preparations, the rest is prize money.
