GICUMBI - Police in Gicumbi District are searching for a group of armed assailants who allegedly shot and injured a man in Rukomo Sector as they attempted to rob him.
Jean Baptiste Nizeyimana, who was shot twice in the thighs, said he was attacked at his shop, which was totally demolished during the incident.
“They were many in number but I couldn’t recognise them because it was very dark. They wanted to steal my motorcycle and all items in my shop,” said Nizeyimana.
The victim is currently undergoing treatment at Byumba Hospital.
Some of the area residents, who spoke to The New Times, said they heard the gunshots but could not intervene out of fear.
“We heard the gunshots but we were terribly scared to go out to see what was happening,” one of the residents said.
The District Police Commander (DPC) Supt. Evariste Gatera, said police was yet to apprehend any suspect but investigations are ongoing.
“We are still hunting for these criminals and we will get them,” Gatera pledged.
“These kinds of cases are very rare in this area”.
