RWANDA beach volleyball teams stormed the finals of the CAVB Continental Cup Pool D after wins over Burundi and Uganda respectively at Nyali Beach in Mombasa, Kenya.
In the men’s category, Rwanda secured their final berth following a 3-2 win over Burundi in the semi finals. They played a 2-all draw in four matches before the winner was decided on a golden set which Rwanda won 15-11.
In the first match, Rwanda A comprising of Flavien Ndamukunda and Jean Luc Mbonyuwuntuma, beat Burundi B 2-1 (15-21, 21-17 and 15-12), Rwanda B composed of Leon Fidel Mutesi and Marchal Pierre Kwizera saw off Burundi A 2-0 (21-15, 21-11).
Burundi also won two other matches with their first team beating Rwanda A 2-0 (21-18, 21-19) and Burundi B beat Rwanda B 2-0 (21-13, 21-15) respectively.
Kenya also booked a place in the final after hammering Egypt 3-1 in the other semi-final yesterday.
In the women category, Rwanda overcame Uganda 3-0 to reach the final. The first pair of Emiliene Uwineza and Jeanette Niyigena beat Uganda B 2-1 (17-21, 21-15 and 15-11).
The second pair of Charllotte Nzayisenga and Judith Hakizimana beat Uganda A 2-0 (23-21 and 21-15).
Rwanda A concluded the rout against Uganda A with a 2-1 victory (24-26, 21-17 and 15-11).
In today’s final, it will be a Rwandan against Kenyan affair in both categories to decide the winner of CAVB Continental Beach Volleyball Cup Pool D
Having reached the final, Rwanda and Kenya are already guaranteed to send both her male and female teams to the next round of the competition as the fight for a place at the London 2012 Olympic Games, now under a year away, continues on the continent.
The winners of the 10 Africa zones will qualify for the final phase, where the top team will clinch the ticket to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
