KARONGI- Heavy rains Monday evening destroyed eight classrooms at Groupe Scolaire de Gishyita in Karongi District.
The downpour accompanied by a storm also damaged nine computers, furniture, text books and an assortment of other school equipment.
Ten houses neighboring the affected school were also demolished, leaving the families homeless.
Clotilde Uwayisaba, the official in charge of social affairs at the sector confirmed that most rooftops blown off as a result of the heavy winds.
“There are reports that more houses were destroyed in other parts of the sector but we are still investigating,” she added.
Most of those affected are struggling to find alternative shelter as rehabilitation efforts continue.
“The entire house and most of my property has been destroyed. It is becoming hard to forge a way forward,” one of those affected in Ngoma village, identified as Nsabimana, said.
The district mayor Bernard Kayumba said that a number of resolutions have been considered in response to the disaster.
“We have mobilised the local communities to assist with labour to rebuild the houses through communal work (Umuganda),” Kayumba said.
Umuganda is due this coming Saturday.
