Nyirabarame could not even march her personal best 2:33:59.

China’s Wei Yanan and Johannes Helaria of Namibia took silver and bronze respectively.

The country’s slim chances now rest on the shoulders of 5000m and 10000m specialist Claudette Mukasakindi and Eric Sebahire who will compete in the 5000m category.

The trio is using the games to prepare for the 10th All Africa Games due in Maputo, Mozambique in September.

In 2004, Dieudonne Disi won silver while competing in the cross country championship.

About 4,900 athletes are taking part in the Military Games.
