JOSEPH Semwaga held his nerve to win yesterday’s Liberation Day Golf tournament at Kigali Golf Club.

The handicap-3 player carded 35 stable ford points on the challenging Par-72 course to beat off stiff competition from Andrew Nkwandi who finished two points off the pace. Steven Katwiremu rounded off the top three slots with 31 points.

56 golfers took part in the one-day tourney which was sponsored by RDF (Rwanda Defense Forces) to mark today’s Liberation Day.

Innocent Rutamu dominated the second competitive category (Handicap 10-18) after returning 41 points while Banada Nganza pipped Igor Sabella in the third competitive category (handicap 19-28) after carding 38 points.

In the ladies category, Claire Kayitesi reigned supreme with 36 points. Linda Mugeni finished second with 34 points while Malvika Rawal claimed third place with 29points.

Emmanuel Ruterana shot one-under par to win the professional’s category.

RDF’s Chief of Staff, Land Forces Lt.Gen.Cesar Kayizari hinted that the event is to be played annual.

“RDF promotes sports because we believe sport is a tool for development, and we have been involved in sports like football, basketball, volleyball and athletics. So we want to extend perimeters to golf.”

Other top army officials who graced the tournament included RDF’s Chief of Defense Staff Lt.Gen Charles Kayonga and Uganda’s Lt.Gen Ivan Koreta who featured as a guest player.
