Etincelles’s dreams of reaching the next stage of the 2001Cecafa/Kagame cup took a huge blow yesterday after losing 1-3 to Vital O’ of Burundi at the Benjamin Mkapa national stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Vital O scored first on the 6th minute through striker Steve Nzigamasabo and the Burundians wedged series of attacks hitting the wood work four times. The first half ended with Vital O leading 1-0.

Etincelles came back in the second half rejuvenated and their persistent attack paid off when Ugandan striker Sylvan Ocanyi equalized on the hour mark.

But after just two minutes, the Burundian champions took the lead for the second time two minutes later on a quick counter which culminated into Steve Minzi chipping the advancing Etincelles goalkeeper.

The Rwandan second representative along with APR got an excellent chance to find a would be equalizer from the penalty spot on the 74th minute but captain Claver Muhire saw his effort go wide off target.

And the Vital O’s Miami Mbakiye showed him how it’s down from a dead ball situation when he converted his team’s third goal from a direct free kick four minutes from time.

In the day’s earlier match Ocean Boys became the first team through to the quarterfinals with a 2-0 win over Red Sea of Eriteria. The Zanzibari side moved top of the Group with 6 points.

Vital O’ is second with 4 points, Simba is third with 1 point while Etincelles remain bottom with no point.

Meanwhile, champions APR take on Kenya’s Ulinzi today. The military side thrashed Ports of Djibouti 4-0 on Sunday. APR are chasing for a treble after wrapping up the league and Peace cup trophies.
