Riviera High School, yesterday, emerged winners in the ongoing competitions aimed at fighting drug abuse in schools.
The contest which brought together 12 schools from Gasabo District involved cultural dance, singing and poetry. Only Riviera presented a drama item.
The competition organised by the association of sports in secondary schools in the country, is aimed at raising awareness on the fight against drugs among the youths in all secondary schools in the country through sports.
The youth, according to police report, are the most vulnerable victims of drugs, either through consumption or dealing in them.
The contest which kicked off at the district level will see the best two schools in each item in every district compete at the league level, before the finals at the national level.
The league involves five districts with the best fighting off the district level.
The Kigali league competition, made up of Gasabo, Kicukiro, Nyarugenge, Bugesera and Gicumbi, kicked off yesterday at IFAK Secondary School.
Jean Pierre Tuyikuze, the offical in-charge of sports in at secondary schools in Gasabo Ddistrict appealed to the youngsters to take an upper hand in the fight against drugs.
“Be part of the campaign to have health youngsters who are responsible for their better future and that of the country,” Tuyikuze said.
Jimmy Bizimungu, the head of Music Dance and Drama in Riviera High School, who received the trophy on behalf of the school, said that the school will, next month, establish anti-drug clubs.
Riviera also topped the singing category with Yani Rwema emerging the best actress.
