GAKENKE - The Executive Secretary of Rusasa Sector, Gakenke District, is in custody after he was arrested while attempting to offer a Rwf 120,000 bribe to a police officer.
Focus Uwimana, was caught red-handed at Hotel Urumuri, as he offered the inducement to a junior policeman, who was supposed to pass it over to the Gakenke District Police Commander, Supt. Christopher Ntaganira.
Uwimana has been under investigation after being implicated in corruption in the district.
“He has a dossier for misusing money meant for the Nine-Year Basic Education. He was contracted to build bridges which were financed by BTC and is accused of demanding for fines from residents without justified reasons, with no receipts,’’ said Supt. Ntaganira.
The authorities, in partnership with Police, are investigating a network of people involved in corruption in Gakenke district, especially regarding the tendering procedures and general misuse of state funds.
“He called me several times (claiming) that he had a ‘message’ for me. I asked him to give it to a policeman, and we tipped police in Musanze. He wanted to avoid being investigated for his role in these corruption scandals,’’ Ntaganira said.
