Editor,

I am pleased to learn that the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), in Arusha, has finally handed a life sentence to Jean Baptiste Gatete, after finding him guilty of genocide.

I come from Eastern Province, and Gatete’s key role in the genocide in this area, is well documented. Survivors have testified with vivid evidence that Gatete is responsible for the massacres of thousands of Tutsis in three parishes of Rwankuba, Kiziguro and Mukarange.

Well, justice has taken long to prevail but I think, it’s better late than never. Gatete’s imprisonment should, therefore be a warning to other genocide suspects still in hiding.

they may run for years, but not forever. Their hands are tainted with blood of innocent souls.

The ICTR has done justice to Rwandans, especially genocide survivors. I wish to appeal to the world to help our country and ICTR by arresting the remaining suspects. If they can’t be sent back to Rwanda, let them be transferred to Arusha for trail.
