NYAMASHEKE—At least 70 of the 96 people recently displaced by heavy rains in Nyamasheke district have successfully resettled in their homes.

They reconstructed their own houses, while the district helped in reconstructing the 18 classrooms that had been washed away by the heavy rains.

“We can finally look past the terrible floods and the destruction cause,” said a victim.

The resettlement of the remaining 26 victims is underway, according to the district’s mayor.
“These are totally vulnerable people who can’t contribute anything to their home reconstruction. The district will construct homes for them,” says Mayor, Jean Baptist Habyarimana.

The Mayor also said that the district will budget for natural disasters in the next fiscal year.
The district is also working towards moving people in disaster prone areas to less dangerous areas.
