Editor,

In the recent past, our national football team has hit an all-time low in the Fifa rankings, although we made just a slight improvement in the latest rankings. Indeed, our national team, Amavubi, has registered dismal performances in the recent years, and lost all its three games at the just concluded CHAN tournament in Sudan. There cannot be a worse run or results.

Nonetheless, the impressive performance of the Junior Wasps early this year during U-17 championship in Kigali that earned the team a dream ticket to the World Cup finals in Mexico later this year should motivate fans and the general public.

These youngsters represent the future of Rwanda’s football and I would like to urge the government and other stakeholders to keep investing in youth football since it has proved to be effective.

I also encourage local teams to give young players a chance on the field and not jeopardize their future by subjecting them to a life on the bench.
