NYAGATARE-Authorities in Nyagatare district have closed several restaurants in Nyagatare town due to poor hygiene. Most of the affected restaurants are in Nyagatare Sector, the district’s main town.

Speaking to The New Times, James Gakuru, the head of the Sector, said the move was meant to protect consumers from contracting diseases.

“We are doing this as part of the government’s effort to ensure sanitation in all places. Restaurants are the most sensitive places that can affect public health,” he said.

The closed restaurants lacked toilets, employee uniforms and clean kitchens.

“We had warned restaurant owners several times to improve on their services. Most of the closed restaurants lack minimum standards and we shall not allow them to reopen until they meet our requirements,” he said.

Stephen Gasore, one of the clients and a student at Umutara Polytechnic University student said the closure came as sad news.

“Almost 65% of the University students get their meals from these restaurants daily. We have nowhere to eat from because all restaurants have been closed,” he complained.
