Media reports have indicated that a total of over 5422,740 voters, yesterday, turned up to exercise their constitutional right to choose their own leaders, who will be critical in implementing development programmes in the country, as well as delivering to the expectations of the electorate.
Reading about Rwanda’s history, you realize that previous regimes, never allowed people to participate in a free political election to choose their leaders. Then, leaders were hand-picked to serve government’s interests.
But today, all people, regardless of their backgrounds or political inclinations, are allowed to vote without intimidation and this explains the high turn-out during elections.
The huge turn out is not a reserve of these local elections as thesame happened during llast year’s presidential elections, where President Paul Kagame emerged the winner. Rwanda has achieved a lot in a space of sixteen years and people truly have faith in their government.
