The Kigali City Mayor, Dr. Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, has finally allowed residents of Muhima Sector to redevelop their homes.
The go-ahead follows numerous complaints from the residents who said that they could not refurbish their houses after having been identified as targets for expropriation.
“They are free to do whatever they want on their plots or refurbish their houses, we carried out a valuation process because we thought we would get investors immediately, but up to now we have not got them,” Kirabo said.
According to the KCC Master Plan, Muhima and Kiyovu are part of the Central Business District (CBD), which does not provide for residential homes.
In line with the master plan, Banks and other real estate financers have been reluctant to fund the development of homes.
“I Recently went to a bank to process a loan to renovate my house, the bank official told me that they are not certain of my security because my house is located in an area earmarked for commercial complexes,” said John Gasana, one of the residents.
The Mayor said that KCC would soon approach concerned authorities to iron out the problem.
“We are planning to meet with Kigali Investment Forum that is composed of banks to appeal to them give loans to these residents to redevelop their houses,” Kirabo noted.
KCC is currently upgrading various roads in Muhima Sector.
