Gatsibo should speed up 9-YBE classrooms

Editor, I wish to express my concern over the slow pace in the construction of classrooms meant for the Nine- year basic education programme in Gatsibo district. Editor,

I wish to express my concern over the slow pace in the construction of classrooms meant for the Nine- year basic education programme in Gatsibo district. The number of pupils enrolling in the district is growing day by day but the construction of classrooms is not corresponding with the growing number of pupils.

According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), primary school enrolment rates increased from 93 percent in 2009 to an impressive 95 percent for 2010, with the figure for girls’ enrolment standing at 97 percent.

The biggest challenge in the districts is how to change things and be able to accommodate the growing number. I read in your newspaper on Wednesday this week that Kicukiro District had inaugurated its 9-YBE Phase II classrooms.

As a concerned resident and a parent in the district, I am really concerned that Gatsibo District will not meet the January, 2011 deadline for the next academic year.

As parents, we would wish to see other districts including Gatsibo using the same strategy applied by Kicukiro District to overcome the shortage of classrooms.
