MTN Rwanda, the country’s largest telecommunication company, has said it will give out Rwf100 million in a new promotion as the company battles to guard its market share from rivals Rwandatel and Tigo Rwanda.
In the new promotion, launched yesterday, MTN will give out up to Rwf1 million to daily winners and Rwf20 million to two monthly winners. The promotions will run for 60 days.
To enter the promotion, one has to be on MTN network and customers are required to send a text ‘WIN or ‘TSINDA’ using Short Message Service (SMS) to code 180. The automated system will then send the customer a question which must be responded to.
Customers will win 20 points for every correct answer to accumulate bonus points that enable them to participate more.
Announcing the promotion, MTN’s Chief Executive Officer, Khaled Mikkawi, said, “For 60 days, someone on our network will win Rwf1 million and two people will win Rwf20 million, meaning a total of Rwf100 million is up for grabs.”
For a client to monitor his or her point they can send a word ‘POINTS or ‘AMANOTA’ to 180.
Draws will be done every Friday and the system will be selecting the top 11 numbers with the highest points which will enter the draw and select the winner.
“During the live draw the winning number will be called. if the selected winner does not answer the call, another number will be selected and this will go on until we have a winner live on air. The same process will be used to select the winner of the Rwf20 million prizes. The first Rwf20 million draw will be held on the 6th of January 2011,” the management said in a press statement.
Meanwhile, because of the tight competition in the telecom market, Mikkawi said, MTN might not meet their revenue targets this year.
“2010 has been a stiff year; we didn’t expect this tough competition but we worked very hard as we managed to acquire 76 percent of the market share and increased our subscriber base to over 2.5 million today,” Mikkawi said.
However, he said that the company managed to surpass its 2010 mobile money subscription target of 130,000 users to over 200,000 since the launch of the product early this year.
