Police has arrested two men for allegedly defiling two young girls in separate incidents.

Melchior Niyotubikesha, 30, was arrested in Kicukiro for raping a five–year old while Desire Nteziyaremye 23, from Rwamagana allegedly defiled a 10-yearold girl.

It is alleged that at about 22 hours on Saturday night, Niyotubikesha, the step-father to the victim, sneaked  out of the room he was sharing with the girl’s mother in Kigarama Sector, and defiled the girl.

Police Spokesperson, Supt. Eric Kayiranga who confirmed the arrest said that Niyotubikesha is believed to have been drunk at the time he allegedly committed the crime.

The girl is currently admitted at the University Teaching Hospital (CHUK). Niyotubikesha was arrested after the mother of the victim sounded an alarm after she heard the daughter crying in the other bedroom.

Nteziyaremye on the other hand, is said to have met the girl at around six O’clock in the evening as she was going home and defiled her.

Kayiranga said that Nteziyaremye admitted the crime. The girl is at Rwamagana hospital while the suspect is held at Kigabiro police station.

Kayiranga said that cases of rape and defilement are on the increase, and appealed to parents to closely monitor their children, especially during holidays.

“Children who are now in holidays are being involved in alcohol and drug abuse and this exposes them to sexual abuse that can consequently lead to unwanted pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases,” Kayiranga observed.

He appealed to parents to engage their children in extra-curricular activities such as sports, reading and drama to avoid redundancy which. he said. is the cause of their exposure to rape and defilement.
