KIREHE - A retired military man who worked as a security officer at Bank de Kigali (BK) Rusumo branch blew himself upwith a grenade last Saturday morning. Francois Hakizinfura, 36, allegedly committed suicide in his home.

According to Police, Hakizimana, a resident of Kibimba village in Kigina sector of Kirehe District, killed himself using a stick grenade in a toilet just adjacent to his house at 11.30 pm.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP), Jules Rutarema, the Kirehe District Police Commander, said that such incidents were rare in the village.

“The reason for the suicide was not immediately known …we are investigating the case. The incident, however, gives us double impression; that people have arms hidden in their homes and can do anything with them,” he said.

Francine Musaniwabo, 33, the wife of the deceased, told The New Times that she was shocked by the death of her husband.

“We heard a loud explosion in the toilet. We found my husband’s body completely ripped apart. It was unbelievable and I will live with the shock for the rest of my life,” she said.

Console Kanzayire, the Executive Secretary of Kigina Sector, said residents were still baffled by the incident, where one of their respected men lay in a pool of blood minutes after talking to them.

She, however, warned that there could have been some domestic issues related to money that led him to commit suicide.

“We are suspecting a number of things; ranging from some money he owed relatives, to personal concern. He could have decided to take his life after finding that he couldn’t pay back the money,” she said.
