Three women jailed over unlawful protest

NYABIHU - The Primary Court of Mukamira in Nyabihu district, on Saturday, cleared one person and sentenced three women to one and a half month in jail for participating in unlawful protest and attacking Police. Beatrice Muhorakeye, Dativa Habyeyi and Jacqueline Umulisa were found guilty of unlawfully organising and participating in unlawful protest on October 20.

NYABIHU - The Primary Court of Mukamira in Nyabihu district, on Saturday, cleared one person and sentenced three women to one and a half month in jail for participating in unlawful protest and attacking Police.

Beatrice Muhorakeye, Dativa Habyeyi and Jacqueline Umulisa were found guilty of unlawfully organising and participating in unlawful protest on October 20.

The trio were protesting against the Military High Court life jail term- which had been handed to Rwanda Defence Forces soldier, Cpl Venant Gahamanyi –who was found guilty of killing six people  and injuring about 13 others in a Mukamira bar on October 8.

“The evidence given proves that the trio organised and participated in a protest against a court decision and attacked security officials who tried to contain the riots.

Therefore, the court hereby sentences the trio to one and a half month in prison,” Judge Sebutunda read the verdict.
The same court cleared Evariste Nzayikunda of the same charges.

Prosecution had asked court to hand the suspects one year jail sentence.
