World Habitat Day celebrated

KIGALI - As the country yesterday celebrated the World Habitat Day, the Minister of Infrastructure, Vincent Karega, called on Government authorities to expedite processes of issuing plots to developers, saying that this will pave way for rapid infrastructure development.

KIGALI - As the country yesterday celebrated the World Habitat Day, the Minister of Infrastructure, Vincent Karega, called on Government authorities to expedite processes of issuing plots to developers, saying that this will pave way for rapid infrastructure development.

At the national level, the day that was celebrated in Kigali City under the theme; ‘Better City, Better Life.’

At the event, Karega urged districts officials to always mobilize local investors to invest in infrastructure, which he said will boost economic development and create jobs.
He, however, urged developers to always adhere to existing rules and regulations like master plans to ensure that cities are developed in an organized manner.

The minister also called for strict observance of the environment and cleanliness throughout the development process.
Annette R. Nyekan, the UN representative, said habitation development was still being hampered by lack of basic infrastructure.

The City Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs, Alphonse Nizeyimana, said that the city have so far in progress infrastructure projects worth Rfw167 billion, while others worth over Rwf135 billion are in the pipeline.

However, he noted that they still face a problem of inadequate qualified personnel in the field of engineering, architecture and urban planning.
