KIGALI - Police in Musanze District are hunting for a woman and her 13-year- old son who allegedly hacked her husband critically last Sunday night.

The incident happened in Micaca Village, Nyange Sector, Musanze District. Sources said Bonaventure Musemakweri, 46, was cut five times on the head, bled profusely and died shortly after reaching Ruhengeri Hospital. He was buried on Monday.

Relatives who arrived at the scene of the crime shortly afterwards found the deceased lying in a pool of blood crying out that his wife and son were killing him.
The suspects identified as Pelagie Nyirabarigira and her son (names withheld because he is a minor), disappeared immediately after the incident.

Felicien Nizeyimana, the deceased’s young brother, who managed to talk to him before he died, described Musemakweri as a peaceful man.

“I came back with him at 7 pm in the evening, there was no quarrel at their home and I went to bed, but at midnight I heard him call my name, saying that I should come and rescue him,’’ Nizeyimana, said.

He suspected that the incident could have been due to a misunderstanding over Rwf16,000 raised from the family sheep that the husband had reportedly refused to hand over to the wife and instead decided to spend on beer.

Makurata Mukahirwa, a daughter of the deceased, who reportedly met the young brother after the incident, said that the two had connived to kill their father. She attributed the murder to long-standing domestic violence and drinking by the deceased.

Speaking to mourners, the district Mayor, Winifrida Mpembyemungu, condemned the incident and urged area residents against domestic violence. She also asked the community policing committee members to be more vigilant.

“How should we explain this (murder), of a wife and son killing the head of the family, don’t you think they had conflicts? Did you ever intervene? Why should parents involve children in such crimes? It is time to stop violence of this nature,’’ she told the mourners.
