THE only way that a new sport will be introduced in Rwanda is if it is taken up by the youth. Rugby is a great sport, and despite its tough nature, it is not one that should not be a firm favourite. I was particularly pleased that there was a national school’s rugby tournament that Apred Ndera won, beating GS Remera Rukomo 15-10, on Saturday.
I’m asking Rwanda’s rugby fraternity to not only organise tournaments like this one, but to even involve primary school children. In the major rugby countries like South Africa, New Zealand and Wales, school children are taught the fundamentals of the game and by the time they are in secondary school they are extremely skilful.
Sadly I couldn’t watch the game, why? Because there wasn’t enough media coverage. I suggest that the rugby fraternity work better with local journalists so that we can watch these talented kids.
