Having read in your paper that six people were arrested in Karongi District in connection with smuggling goods from the DR Congo, I feel that I must add my voice to this discussion. I think that smuggling isn’t merely a crime. It is a manner through which citizens rob the State of its very life blood.
When the State cannot perform its duties of protecting citizens, anarchy reigns. Therefore, what these smugglers are doing is stabbing themselves in the back without their knowledge.
Paying tax, as long as it’s fair and not discriminatory, is one of our civic duties. If we want to enjoy the protection and privileges that the State gives us, we must be able to pay our dues.
