RWANDA’s tennis prospect Mathieu Uwizeyimana failed to get past the first round of the ITF Men’s Futures Burundi leg after yesterday’s straight sets defeat against Mario Dierckx. The Belgian was too good for the 20-year-old as he cruised to a 6-0 6-2 win in just over an hour.

Moments later, Dierckx’s twin brother Marco Dierckx secured a slot in the second round after making light work of Uganda’s top tennis player Duncan Mugabe after a 6-3 6-4 victory.

In general, it was a disappointing day for African players as Onyeka Mbanu (Nigeria), Hassan Mrisho (Burundi), Takanyi Garanganga (Zimbabwe), Motaz Khair (Egypt), Uganda’s Robert Buyinza and the Moroccan pair of Younes Rachidi and Anas Fattar all suffered first round exits.

From Burundi, players will descend on Kigali for the second leg before heading to Kampala for the third and final leg. Cash Prizes equating to $10,000 will be dished out at the end of each leg.
