Following the increase of fire outbreaks in several parts of the country, the National Police has appealed to Rwandans to be vigilant and always report any fire incidents swiftly for timely intervention.

Police Spokesperson, Supt. Eric Kayiranga made the call yesterday in a press statement.

“Cases of fire are on the rise because of recklessness. The population needs to know that the process of putting it out is costly and they should be vigilant to avoid it,” Kayiranga said.

This follows a series of fire breakouts mainly in Kigali City especially during the last couple of months.

Fours fires were reported in Kigali, two of them occurred at the premises of telecommunication companies, Rwandatel and TIGO.

The Rwandatel fire is said to have been caused by a short circuit from a generator, according to a police report, but was successfully put out before it consumed a nearby fuel tank and the antenna located a few meters from the generator.

Kayiranga said that the Police Fire and Rescue brigade is well equipped to handle fire, cave-in accidents and air disasters.

CIP Paçifique Cyangabwoba, the Acting Commanding Officer of the brigade, gave the following telephone numbers; 122, 0788311220, 0788311224 and 0788311201 to be called on in case of any fire accident.
