MUHANGA - Police in Nyamabuye Sector, Muhanga District, are holding two men who allegedly stabbed an area resident, during a bar fight.
Alexis Dusengumuremyi, 24, and Faustin Nyandwi, 22, both employees of the Brothers Inn, a bar and restaurant located on the Butare-Kigali highway, are said to have stabbed Eugene Karangwa in the ribs and bruised his face as they fought over a bottle of beer.
Karangwa is the chairperson of IBUKA in Muhanga District.
The incident happened on Monday at about 9 p.m., after Karangwa and a group of revellers tried to leave the bar with the beer bottle.
“This resulted into a verbal exchange with the two employees. The next thing I realised I was being beaten up and stabbed. I was bleeding profusely and was rushed to hospital,” he narrated.
The two suspects, however, denied intentionally assaulting the victim.
One of them, (a waiter) argued that he bruised Karangwa’s face in self defence after the scuffle ensued, while Dusengumuremyi (guard) denied fighting, saying he only intervened to calm the situation.
According to eye witnesses, Nyandwi used a corkscrew to stab Karangwa,.
Sources suggest that Nyandwi harboured a personal grudge against Karangwa. They both hail from Nyaruguru District.
However, Police officials say investigations were still ongoing to establish the cause of the scuffle.
“Investigation in to case is underway, but the suspects will be charged with intentional and pre-meditated violence. Clients should be handled with care and a bottle is not enough reason to hurt a reveller,” Police said.
Police appealed to owners of drinking joints to always ensure security and discipline to avoid such incidents.
