Matusi is Rwanda’s flag carrier as Singapore Youth Games start

Teenage boxer Haziza Matusi has been appointed the country’s flag bearer during the opening ceremony of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games which start this evening in Singapore. The team’s Chef de Mission, Thierry Ntwali said yesterday in an e-mail, “We chose Matusi because he is the most experienced player we have on the team. We all believe he will achieve the best results as well when the competition starts.”

Rwanda team which arrived in Singapore on Thursday after a 17-hour flight will be among the 205 national Olympic committees that will march in today’s opening ceremony set for 7pm (local time).

The Youth Games are expected to attract 3600 young athletes between the age of 14 to 18, an estimated 1400 officials, 1,200 media representatives, 20,000 local and international volunteers and about 370,000 spectators.

Rwanda’s hopes of winning a medal rest on boxer Matusi. The other participants include; Marie Claudine Iradukunda (swimming) and the athletics pair of Potien Ntawuyirushintege and Jacqueline Murekatete.
