Rwanda’s top professional golfer Emmanuel Ruterana is leaving nothing to chance in a bid to win the East African Golf tour Mombasa leg.
The 27-year-old along with colleague Jean Baptiste Hakizimana is already in Kenya for acclimatization before the 4-day event tees off on 11th August at Nyaru Golf Club.
The pair departed last Friday and Ruterana told this paper that his target is to return home with winner’s pussy of Ksh 3m (about Rwf 21.9m).
But he knows to be able to achieve his objective; he needed adequate preparation for the tournament that will be graced by the cream of the golf elite in the region with the hosts posing the biggest challenge.
“These kind of tournaments need enough preparation, and that is what I and Jean Baptiste (Hakizimana) have decided to do.
“I have so far trained for four days and the golf course is quite good. The only problem is that it is very windy here in Mombasa but I will cope,” Ruterana said in a telephone interview yesterday.
Inevitably, Ruterana expects the biggest competition to come from the home boys Dismas Indiza and Richard Ainley (Ainley won the KCB Kigali leg) but he also doesn’t rule out the capability of Uganda’s Deo Akope.
The Rwandan duo is being sponsored by Serena Hotel and Ernst and Young.
According to sources, over 120 professional golfers from the region are expected to grace the event.
