Although I can understand the wish for vengeance, I cannot subscribe to the Hammurabi code of ‘an eye for an eye’ because as the great Gandhi said, “an eye for an eye shall make the whole world blind’.
Recently, local journalist Jean Leonard Rugambage was shot and killed because, as Didace Nduguyangu, the self confessed killer said, he felt that the Gacaca courts hadn’t given him a stringent enough jail sentence.
This is unfortunate. What satisfaction will he have while he languishes in jail as well? We all should aspire to join the Gandhian school of thought.
