Rwanda’s U16 boys team saw their chances of progressing to the later stages of the ongoing FIBA U16 African Championships in Vacoas-Phoenix, Mauritius, diminish further after losing 45-101 against defending champions Egypt on Friday afternoon.

It was Rwanda’s second consecutive defeat at the biennial event following the 61-39 reverse to Algeria in the opening game on Thursday.

Egypt, who are the tournament favourites, dominated the match in all four quarters; 9-31, 15-20, 6-25 and 15-25 respectively, to register their second successive win.

Jean de Dieu Umuhoza was Rwanda’s top scorer with 13 points, while Egypt’s Mohamed Hassan dropped a game high 17 points.

Rwanda’s Thierry Nkundwa and Aly Khalifa of Egypt were the game’s top performers.

Nkundwa dropped 12 points, nine rebounds, two steals and had a game efficiency of 14, while Khalifa scored 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals one block and a game efficiency of 22.

Rwanda returns to action today when they take on Madagascar in a must-win game for both teams. Madagascar narrowly lost to Algeria 59-60 yesterday.
