Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of three Rwandan peacekeepers in Western Darfur, Sudan on June 21. My thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones in service to their country and to the principles of freedom and peace.

The recent attacks against your country’s contingent in Darfur and the tragic deaths of your countrymen are painful reminders that peacekeeping in areas of instability is a dangerous endeavor. The United States is calling upon the Government of Sudan to take immediate action to locate and bring to justice the perpetrators of these terrible crimes. We will continue our longstanding efforts to end the reign of violence and impunity in Darfur.

On behalf of the government and the people of the United States, I also want to express my support and appreciation for Rwanda’s substantial participation in, and leadership of, the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), a mission whose military contingent is led by-one of your countrymen. Rwandan troops in Sudan have demonstrated remarkable professionalism under very difficult circumstances, and continue to receive praise for their actions.

Rwanda’s deep and unwavering commitment to the restoration and maintenance of peace and stability in Sudan is recognized and honored by the international community, and greatly appreciated by all.

Sincerely yours,
Hillary Rodham
Clinton
US Secretary of State
