Musanze accident blamed on over speeding

MUSANZE - A fatal road accident along Ruhengeri-Kigali highway, in which a truck registration number RAB 945, knocked dead a cyclist and injured 27 people has been blamed on over speeding. According to eye witnesses, the accident occurred at 7pm, on Saturday when the Fuso truck with 12 people on board knocked down a cyclist before it lost control and rammed into a group of people who were returning from a wedding ceremony.

MUSANZE - A fatal road accident along Ruhengeri-Kigali highway, in which a truck registration number RAB 945, knocked dead a cyclist and injured 27 people has been blamed on over speeding.

According to eye witnesses, the accident occurred at 7pm, on Saturday when the Fuso truck with 12 people on board knocked down a cyclist before it lost control and rammed into a group of people who were returning from a wedding ceremony.

The Police spokesperson Supt. Eric Kayiranga attributed the accident to over speeding of the truck and said that the driver would be apprehended for more investigations. 

The driver of the fateful truck, Mbonigaba JMV, who handed himself over to the Police on Monday, said that he was carrying 12 construction workers from Gakenke district.

“I tried to dodge a cyclist on one side of the road who had all over a sudden appeared but accidentally I hit another one on the opposite side which led to the truck’s loss of control. That is how I ended up knocking a gathering of people standing on the road…”, Mbonigaba said.

The dead was identified only as Turikumwenimana, 28.
Seven people sustained severe fractures and 21 others escaped with minor injuries.

According to the medics in Ruhengeri Hospital, three people with fracture related complications have been so far operated on while over 10 have been discharged. Hundreds of people rushed to the scene to rescue the victims.

Mbonigaba, who admitted to over speeding, at the time of the accident accused cyclists of wrongly using the road which is currently under reconstruction.
