NYAGATARE- Police in Nyagatare district on Wednesday nabbed an ambulance carrying illicit drugs in Matimba sector, Nyagatare District.

According to Police officials at Nyagatare police post, the ambulance, Reg No: IT 746 RB belongs to AVEGA, an organisation of Genocide widows operating in Rwamagana District.

“One of our Police officers was on a night patrol in Matimba sector last night when he found an ambulance packed near a health centre…on going to find out what it was doing at such late hours, he was surprised to see the driver speed off,’ one of the Police officers at Nyagatare Police station told The New Times in an interview.

‘We later found when it was carrying 76 litres of local brew commonly known as Kanyanga and cartons of Chief Waragi,’ he said.

Police said the driver is still on the run.
In a telephone interview, the head of AVEGA-Rwamagana, Odette Kayirere, confirmed the development.

“Yes, our vehicle was nabbed by the Police after one of the drivers diverted the vehicle to carry illicit alcohol,” she said.

She however added that when they heard of the incident, they communicated to the driver who later switched off his phone.
