MUHANGA - Police and local defence personnel on Monday mounted a crackdown on idlers in Gitarama town, arresting at least 30 people.

Those arrested were screened at Nyamabuye Police Station. Police said similar operations will continue throughout the week for the purposes of curbing crime.

The operation came weeks after the District Security Council, raised concerns over the increasing number of petty crimes which are blamed on idlers.

Jean Baptiste Mugunga, the Nyamabuye sector leader said, “such operations will continue so as to make the town secure.’He added that the swoop also targeted dealers in illegal trade.

Some of the affected traders however, who talked to this reporter , claimed that they were innocent and  that they only lacked capacity to register their businesses.

However, Mugunga explained that those arrested or affected are known to be behind some of the petty crime that has hit the town recently.

The Southern Province security meeting report, made public on May 30, indicated that Muhanga district registered the highest number of crimes committed during the month of May.
