KARONGI – Christians from different religious groups in Karongi district under the umbrella organization Peace Plan-Rwanda, last Sunday held a peaceful demonstration to campaign against HIV/Aids and its effects.

Carrying placards and banners bearing different messages condemning the scourge and creating awareness about its dangerous effects, the Christians marched around Kibuye town to convey their messages.

Polepole Paulin, the association’s official in charge of health explained that the initiative was meant to enlighten the public about the prevention against the spread of the disease and raise awareness against stigma.

“We advocate for the public to prevent the rampant spread of HIV through the respect of God’s principles and the enormous support for those living with the virus especially the orphans and widows,” Polepole said.

Most of the Christians who attended the demonstration, expressed optimism that the local population is most likely able to get the message if the public is involved in the awareness campaigns.

“Playing a significant role in the struggle against the scourge is the only way to create a difference in the general public’s opinion,” Sheema Mukumburwa, one of the marchers observed.
