When Donald Trump first announced his candidacy in June last year, I, like many, thought it was a joke and for weeks, waited for his apology for taking things too far and an announcement that he was pulling out of the US Presidential race.
With months to the elections which are scheduled for November, it looks like Trump has no intention of pulling out and he could go on to win.
I wouldn’t vote for him but I’m starting to see why people are voting for him. For all the lectures the US gives nations around the world on respecting the will of the people, leaders of the Republican Party to which Trump belongs, are attempting to stop him from winning the party’s nomination. The system itself is flawed or in Trump’s opinion, rigged.
Any election should be a simple process, especially in the developed world. People vote, the candidate with the most votes is declared winner of whatever office they’re running for. As simple as that. Why do Americans vote and then a few delegates decide the eventual winner? It doesn’t make sense.
If a million votes are cast, whoever wins the majority of those votes should take the race. How hard is that? This is the same reason I don’t particularly like Presidential runoffs where say the top two or three candidates then head into a second round of voting to decide the winner.
I feel like whoever gets the majority in the initial round of voting should go on to become President to save time and resources. Back to the US, Republican Party officials want to change the rules because Trump doesn’t fit their party narrative and doesn’t have the same values they do, which I understand because I too think Trump is overboard and has extreme views on almost everything but people are voting for him and who are we to dispute that?
Isn’t that what democracy is all about? Of the People, by the people for the people or simply put, listening to the will of the people? I think overall, American voters are just tired of ‘dirty’ politicians who promise one thing and deliver another. Trump says it as it is.
He doesn’t care if he offends anyone and if he gets into office and does everything he has said he will do, including building the infamous wall to keep illegal migrants out, no one will be surprised because that’s exactly what he said he would do and there are people voting for him because that’s what they want him to do.
I also like the fact that so far, he has been using his “own” money, something he himself has stressed many times. He may turn out to be just as corrupt as the rest but I always prefer politicians who go in rich. I feel like once they assume office, their priority is not to loot everything they can get their hands on since they already have everything. I could be naïve but honestly, what else could a President Trump be eager to acquire?
The man owns multiple properties, private jets and what not. I don’t even think he knows how many cars or buildings he owns. Do you think he would take bribes from anyone? Disclaimer: I am not endorsing Donald Trump.
