Title hopefuls Rayon Sports reclaimed top spot after thrashing Marines FC 3-0 in the National Football League on Sunday at Kigali Regional Stadium—Rayon’s win coincided with APR’s shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of lowly Etincelles on Friday.

Following his team return to pole position in the title race, Rayon Sports interim head coach Djuma Masudi admitted that his side can now only focus on reclaiming the league title that they last won in 2013 under Frenchman Didier Gomez.

The Blues secured all three points courtesy of an excellent brace from Ugandan-born striker Davis Kasirye and another from Malian international, Ismaila Diarra.

Rayon Sports lead the table with 35 points, a point ahead of defending champions APR FC, who dropped to second spot with 34 points while Mukura VS stay in third place with 32 points. Marines remain in 11th position with 17 points after 16 rounds of matches.

“Our first priority is to win the league title. I know it will be hard because it is still too early, but in life you have to be ambitious and set high targets in order to achieve the best results,” the former Burundi international, Masudi told Times Sport in the post-match interview.

He added, “The recent results are good …and this is a challenge for us to keep the momentum going. This team has showed that it’s capable of winning more than it loses, however, we must continue working hard in training to correct our mistakes and weaknesses ahead of the next games.”

His counterpart of Marines, Abdul Karim ‘Coka’ Nduhirabandi, said, “We have lost to a big team. We made mistakes and they have punished us. We are going to re-organise and try to do better in the next match. Rayon Sports supporters played a key role in their team’s win today.”

Elsewhere, Police beat Mukura Victory Sports 1-0 at Kicukiro Stadium, thanks to central defender Fabrice Twagizimana’s goal. Andre Cassa Mbungo’s team remains in fourth place with 31 points, a point behind Mukura.
