Thousand Hills beat Lion de Fer to maintain lead

Sunday Lion de Fer 9-34 Thousand Hills Saturday Remera Buffaloes 62-0 Kigali SharksResilience 34-6 Muhanga Thousand Hills maintained top spot in the rugby league after beating a physical but disjointed Lion de Fer 34-9 at the Utexrwa ground on Sunday afternoon. Full back David Kasanga opened the scoring for Thousand Hills in the first half and added another in the second half pace. Winger Fidele Fils Irumva and substitute scrum half Serge Shema added a try each to secure a bonus point for Thousand Hills. All tries were converted by kicker Carlos Simbi who also scored two penalties. Lion de Fer managed three penalties, which were converted by Captain Victorien Umuhire in the second half. “It wasn’t an easy game, we have had limited training and most of our players didn’t come but in the next game, we will be better prepared,” said Umuhire. A moment of silence was observed for Ronan Bastit Thousand Hill’s number 8 who passed away two weeks ago before the game. On Saturday Kigali Sharks were mauled by Remera Buffaloes 60-2 in a one sided game. Sharks captain Barnabas Ngizwenayo, blamed the loss on his team’s lack of experience and being intimidated by Remera. Thousand Hills top the Kigali league with 9 points followed by Remera with 5, Lion de Fer share a point with Kigali Sharks, but are third having conceded less tries. In the Southern Province new league entrants, Rusizi’s Resilience had a dream start as they stunned visitors Muhanga 34:6 with five tries. Muhanga succumbed as the game progressed due to travel fatigue which gave Resilience an advantage. Muhanga lie bottom of the four team southern league with two losses, Resilience are on top with 5 and Kamonyi Pumas are second with 4. UR Grizzlies are yet to play. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
