Security guaranteed during CHAN – Police

With less than 48 hours to the official kickoff of the fourth edition of Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), which starts on Saturday, Rwanda National Police has said public order and safety will be assured. Rwanda will host 15 African national teams for the three-week tournament, in addition to thousands of people from all over the continent, who will be in the country to enjoy Africa’s second biggest international football event. In an interview with Times Sport on Wednesday, RNP spokesperson Celestin Twahirwa revealed that everything is set to ensure that security is guaranteed throughout the tournament. “We have visited and conducted thorough security and risk assessment at all CHAN sites in the county including all the four stadiums, and hotels accommodating the participating teams to ensure their safety,” said Twahirwa. Twahirwa disclosed that RNP has already deployed its officers at the venues and will also deploy Police units like the fire brigade unit, Canine brigade, and the Public Order and Management unit. Twahirwa added that, “Celebrations will be allowed but must be held in accordance with the law, and should not interfere with public order.” Several toll free lines have been availed to ease immediate reporting. The toll free numbers are; 110 in case of water accident specifically for people in Rubavu on the shores of Lake Kivu, 111 for fire brigade, 113 for road accidents. Others are 3511 to report abuse by a police officer, 112 for any emergency, 3512 in case of gender based violence, 997 for any bribe and any other corruption related case, and 116 in case of child abuse. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
