Dieudonne Habiyambere overcame compatriot Etienne Niyigena in the third round of the ongoing Uganda Tennis Open to make it to the quarterfinals where he faces Ugandan Simon Ayelle this morning at Lugogo Tennis courts in Kampala.
Rwanda’s top seed Habiyambere overwhelmed Niyigena in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 to set up a quarterfinal meet with youngster Ayelle.
The 31-year-old Habiyambere had reached the third round after brushing aside David Wonrawa 6-2, 6-2 while Ayelle defeated James Bayego,6-1, 6-2.
Elsewhere in the third round, Damascene Munyaneza overpowered Henry Mayanja of Uganda in two sets 6-2, 6-3 to book a slot in the quarterfinals where he will be up against second seed Denis Oringa. Olivier Nkunda also won 6-4, 6-1 over homeboy Carley Kalungi to reach quarters where he takes on Ibrahim Kibet of Kenya.
Hopeful Kibet, the only Kenyan, reached the round of eight after humbling Rwandan Mathieu Uwizeyimana in three sets (2-1) 7-5, 6-7 and 6-3 respectively.
In the women’s singles category, Rwanda’s ace Meganne Ingabire beat Hellen Musuza of Uganda in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 in the second round and was yet to know her opponent in today’s quarter-finals by press time.
