Former students of Ntare School in Uganda, under their umbrella organisation, Ntare School Old Boys Association (NSOBA) Rwanda Chapter, are set to embark on a major fundraising drive to build a model secondary school to the level of their former school.
According to Charles Gahima, the chairman of the Rwandan chapter, the modern school, to cost over Rwf2.5bn, will be located in Bugesera District and old boys; President Paul Kagame and his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni, are expected to grace the fundraising drive.
“We have set June 19 as a tentative date for the patrons’ dinner. This will depend on the availability of the two Presidents,” Gahima told The New Times.
“We are expecting OBs from Uganda to come here where among other things, we will have a bull-roasting and foundation laying event at the site and thereafter we will have a football game between OBs against another team known as Vision 2020,”
The football game will be followed by a fundraising dinner at Kigali Serena Hotel hosted by the two Presidents. Over 100 OBs from Uganda are expected to join 113 Rwandan OBs in the fundraising drive.
According to Gahima, the school which will be named after its Ugandan counterpart will be seated on a 50 hectare piece of land donated by Bugesera District and will have all the attributes of a modern secondary school.
“Completion will depend on the availability of funds but we are looking at a period of 3 years to hand it over to the district and the Ministry of Education. It will be a model high school and ICT based and will function as a Government school,” Gahima further said.
“We want to give back to the society by helping to have the same values and norms that Ntare School instilled in us. We want others to experience what we experienced at Ntare School, and also follow the concept Ntare School has taken.”
Ntare School located in South Western Uganda is one of the oldest and best performing schools in Uganda and has nurtured a number of prominent figures including politicians, businessmen and opinion leaders.
