A holiday literally means an extended period of leisure and recreation, especially one spent away from home or in travelling. To this it can be added, time spent away from work—that is a break from work.
There is an old adage that “all work and no play make Jack a dull boy.” This holds true even today.
While at work, one follows the same routine five-six days a week which makes it very monotonous. Problems at work both real and imaginary tend to pile up in one’s mind. Therefore one does not really relax totally.
He/she returns home in the evening after a day’s work, but the mind rests on the routine to be followed next day.
On a daily basis, this routine becomes stressful. Many people succumb to this stress and start suffering from anxiety, depression, mental disorders, etc.
This may manifest as dryness of mouth, increased heart beat, insomnia, early fatigue and lack of interest in life. It also becomes a cause for stress related diseases like hypertension, diabetes, heart problems, peptic ulcer, etc.
Wear and tear of body tissues due to stress becomes a cause for cancer as well. Such persons do their routine work like a zombie with lack of initiative or any enthusiasm towards it. This affects their efficiency and also reduces productivity of the entire organization.
A holiday or change from work refreshes the mind as well as body. The complete relaxation provided by a vacation helps to rejuvenate body tissues as well, removing fatigue and makes the person feel more energetic and enthusiastic.
While away from work, when the mind is refreshed, one gets novel ideas and the will to do it after coming back.
Therefore taking a vacation after months of work is necessary for the employee and useful for the employer as well. Realizing this, most institutions give paid leave to their employees.
Holiday should not be, just not doing work and sitting at home, but it should be a clean break from the daily routine, workplace and even home for a short time. One can go to a holiday resort, go to a lake side, visit a new place or indulge in some adventure. This helps in recreation and stimulates the mind as well. The experience gained by travelling adds on to one’s knowledge and even confidence levels.
If a person just takes off from work and sits idle at home in same familiar environment, he does not feel relaxed completely. Because both the stress and positive things of the environment still remain with him.
Moreover after some time they start getting bored. Going to pubs or night clubs just to kill time, does not provide a sense of complete relaxation and joy. Some responsibilities and task of home or office will definitely catch hold of a person, if they linger around.
But unfortunately many people do not understand the importance of going out on a vacation. They consider it to be a waste of money and or time. For some people, holiday simply means to be on bed till late morning.
Some people go on postponing their vacation till after completion of a task or responsibility. For the ambitious professional, a tentative vacation is planned after obtaining a set goal in their career. Little do they realize that by this time they could be burnt out energywise.
It is not only in under developed countries but also in the developed western world, that people do not realize the importance of going out on a vacation. According to the 2009 International Vacation Deprivation Study, commissioned by travel service company Expedia, more than 30 percent of Americans did not use all their vacation days. One of the major reasons Americans leave vacation days unused is the fear of losing their jobs, according to CNN.
For complete relaxation, keeping good health and improving performance at work, it is vital for individuals to take a holiday such that it provides a complete change of environment and that would be possible only by going out.
