Reference is made to Dr Rachna Pande’s article, “Here is what you need to know about stroke” (The New Times, December 8).
What I don’t understand from Dr. Pande’s article is the avoidance of the word “high blood pressure”.
Uncontrolled high blood pressure can raise the risk of a blood vessel getting blocked or bursting. Most strokes among people of African descent, is due to high blood pressure.
Knowing the causes of high blood pressure (such as smoking, not exercising, overweight (obesity), alcoholism, too much salt…) can reduce many strokes.
If we can fight the causes of high blood pressure, then we can say that our fight regarding primary strokes has been achieved at a whopping 70%.
However, I do appreciate the advice on treatment and care that was given in the article.
