RWAMAGANA – Scores of livestock farmers in Mwurile sector, Rwamagana district, have protested against the veterinary officials’ decision to charge them for vaccinating cows.
Last Sunday’s vaccination exercise turned chaotic after farmers complained about being asked to part with Rwf 300 per cow.
The residents further alleged that the agriculture and veterinary officers have been receiving money from them without issuing official Government receipts.
‘How will the agriculture officer in charge of the immunisation programme account for the money for which there was no receipts?’, one farmer asked.
Doroteya Uwamurera another farmer, said, “We are amazed by the behaviour of these officials. Look at this paper we’re being given; it has no stamp or signature and it is not even the official sector receipt.”
However, the agriculture officer said that the money received will later be remitted to the districts. He added that the amount paid is written against the names of the farmers.
“There is nothing wrong with paying since the money will end in good hands. I don’t’ think they need to worry about anything,” he said.
