MUHANGA - Residents of Kinini cell, Shogwe sector, in Muhanga district have joined hands to build a new house for an 81-year old blind woman, Maria Niwebarere, who still lives in a grass thatched house.

The construction commenced this week as part of an initiative of sector leaders in conjunction with the members of the National Women’s Council (CNF) in Shogwe, to eliminate all grass thatched houses in the area.

“The house will cost at least Rwf500,000 and we have mobilised participation through community work. It will take us at least two months to complete, said Evode Mahoro, the cell leader.

The sector CNF coordinator, Suzanna Mujawamaria, said the humanitarian work was partly in response to the government programme of encouraging the construction of modern buildings.

The ageing Niwebarere welcomed the community initiative and called for continued support.

Reports indicate that there are at least 120 grass-thatched houses in Muhanga district.
