MUHANGA – The association of former sex workers, Tubuserere-Ihorere-Munyarwanda, has added its voice to the condom campaign in a bid to fight HIV/AIDS in Muhanga district.
The association members made the call last Thursday during a condom promotion event in Nyamabuye sector. The campaign was sponsored by National Aids Control Commission (CNLS).
The promotion day was marked by a football match between ex-sex workers and traders. The promotion also entailed various forms of drama competitions which ended with a peaceful march through Gitarama town for the purposes raising awareness about the new measures.
The best plays were rewarded with cash prizes.
The message behind the drama shows were about eliminating the negative attitude of people towards using condoms.
“The aim of the campaign is to make the community aware of HIV/AIDS and to have their involvement in the use of condoms. Such sensitisation is needed in order to cut down on prevalence rates” said Florida Mutamuliza, a CNLS official.
Mutamuliza also revealed that the use of condoms has improved over the years due to input by key partners and increased awareness campaigns.
“It is evident from the big numbers of condoms used that there has been a change in mentality towards use of condoms,” she said.
District officials also urged residents to talk openly about sex.
